5 Interesting Facts About Water You Might Not Know

By Ryan Tedder |  Published

Water. An essential source of life for every human, animal, and plant on planet Earth. But while it keeps us and everything else refreshed, hydrated, and healthy, water is also a unique substance in its own right, full of surprises, whichever form it’s in. So, since March is the month for World Water Day, we’ve gathered our favourite five interesting facts about water that you might not already know.

1. Water is the only substance that can be three separate things

Water is the only substance on Earth that can be in three different states: liquid, solid, or gas. As a liquid, we can drink it and use it however we need to. In its solid form as ice, it can retain its shape (until it turns into a liquid again), and as a gas, or water vapour, it’s in the air all around us.

2. Just 3.5% of Earth’s water is fresh

Amazingly, only 3.5% of all the Earth’s water is fresh, meaning it’s without salt. This figure is the sum total of every stream, river, lake, and reservoir on the planet – all of which needs treatment if we use it. But even more amazingly, around 68% of our 3.5% of freshwater is locked in our polar ice caps, icebergs, and colossal glaciers, which we can't use, and around 30% is groundwater which is trapped deep underground.

3. 96.5% of Earth’s water is saltwater

This huge amount of salt water in the five oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Antarctic) covers around 71% of the Earth’s surface – roughly 326 million trillion gallons (that’s 326 with 18 zeros). These oceans are fundamental to our water cycle, continually shifting tons of water in evaporation, condensation to form clouds, and precipitation as rain or snow – which then flows back into the ocean.

4. We drink around 60,000 litres of water

Drinking regularly throughout the day, every day, helps keep us healthy and hydrated. But when you look at how much you could consume over an average lifetime, it works out to be quite a lot. You should drink around 2 litres of water each day, so if you live to be 80, that’s around 58,400 litres of water in a lifetime – enough to fill 730 bathtubs.

5. Our bodies are 60% water

Water is an essential part of the body’s biological makeup and plays a crucial role in keeping our bodies working each day. As our bodies are around 60% water, drinking water regularly is vital to maintain our natural fluid balance and helps keep our: hearts beating, joints lubricated, muscles hydrated, toxins flushed, body heat regulated, digestive systems working, and immune systems healthy. So it pays to keep topped up!
