Why Not Set A New Year's Resolution You Might Be Able To Keep?

It’s that time of year again. Office parties, family get-togethers, and awkward social niceties with the neighbours. With all the festive indulgence through most of December, it’s easy to see why so many of us have the best intentions when making our usual New Year’s resolutions of losing weight, exercising more, and quitting smoking. So why not start with something a little easier?

A simple New Year’s resolution

While weight loss, increased exercise, and defeating the toxic weed are all admirable, health-driven targets, do we stick to them? According to research, adults in the UK are likely to stick with their new regimen for only seven weeks – stopping before the end of February. But over 20% of us will give up even before the end of January.

Perhaps because most of our targets are planned in a haze of Prosecco, Baileys, mulled wine and a mountain of ultra-processed foods, it’s no surprise that we find it hard to commit. So, during this festive season, when planning your New Year’s resolutions – achievable or otherwise – why not start with something easy?

Drink. More. Water

It’s really simple: drink more of the clear, plain stuff that will literally keep you alive. But do you really need to make a New Year’s resolution for that? Well, probably, yes. For all its simplicity, many of us don't drink enough water during the day. So, here are some tips on how you can improve your water-drinking game.

Make it a habit

We all know drinking water is good for you. So, drink a tall glass of water while making your morning coffee and have another while making your evening meal. Start a simple routine for this New Year’s resolution that can help you make it a habit

Set reminders

If you’re settling into some serious, uninterrupted work in the office, set yourself a series of reminders at regular intervals to prompt you to visit the office water cooler and grab a glass.

Get a refillable bottle

Taking a refillable water bottle into the office is a perfect way to stay hydrated all day. If you don't have a water cooler at home, but there’s one at work, fill up with pure-filtered, great-tasting chilled water as soon as you get in the office.

Gulp, don’t sip

To drink more, try gulping the water instead of taking small sips. While sipping is acceptable for a meeting or an interview, you won’t take a meaningful amount on board. So, now and then, take a few big gulps to boost your intake.

And for those office parties and late nights out…

Dehydration is the leading cause of a furious hangover that leaves you feeling hanging the next day. So do yourself a favour and drink plenty of water before you go out, between drinks, and when you get home. Here are some other top tips to help avoid a hangover.
