Is Filtered Water Better For You?

To help maintain good drinking habits and maintain your recommended 6-8 glasses of water per day, drinking the best tasting water possible can be a great help. To keep your water tasting as fresh as possible, using a filter is invaluable in removing any bad taste, but is drinking filtered water better for you?

What Is In Unfiltered Tap Water?

While UK tap water is regularly checked to ensure that it is at a standard that is safe to drink, to achieve these standards UK tap water is processed with large amounts of potentially harmful chemicals, which may cause health problems if regularly ingested over a long period of time. Chemicals such as chlorine are used to disinfect our drinking water, which can give water a bad taste and smell.

Tap water can also contain sediment and scale-forming minerals that it picks up from the pipes it travels through to get to your tap – some of which are as old as 150 years old – as well as from the ground when rainwater passes through soft rocks such as limescale and chalk.

And there is also the ever-growing amount of microplastics present in tap water. As plastic products break down, particles of plastic can find themselves in our water supplies at smaller sizes than large scale filtering systems can filter out. This has led to our tap water containing up to 10 microplastic pieces per litre.

Is Filtered Water Better For You?

As we have seen, while UK tap water might meet the standards set for it to be drinkable, there is a lot more than meets the eye to prevent it from being the freshest and best tasting water possible. In the UK, tap water generally includes total dissolved solids of 150-420ppm, and this can cause both a poor taste as well as potential health effects after long-term consumption.

Drinking filtered water, such as from a mains-fed cooler equipped with a Pura advanced filtration system, not only ensures that your drink is as fresh and great-tasting as possible, helping you to maintain your hydration levels throughout the day, but also removes the cause of this bad taste –  including chlorine, sediment, scale-forming minerals and microplastics down to a size of up to 1 micron – to ensure that the water you are drinking is as beneficial as possible.
