Is Drinking Hot Water A Good Source Of Hydration?

By Matt Stimpson |  Published

Hands down, water is the best way to keep yourself hydrated. Whether it’s ice-cold or ambient room temperature, it’s great for both mind and body. Its health benefits are undeniable and we always encourage you to drink more, but is drinking hot water a good source of hydration as well? After all, we drink hot tea or coffee, so can hot water increase hydration or give us any unexpected, extra benefits?

Hot water hydration and health benefits

Before we get started, we should clarify that when we say ‘hot water’, it should be hot enough to drink comfortably without scolding you. Drinking anything hotter than a normal cup of tea or coffee could have major health implications. Let it cool for a while, just like you do with a normal brew.

1. Clear your congestion

Drinking hot water could help give relief if you’re suffering from a blocked nose, cough, or sore throat. While the warm steam could help to clear blocked sinuses, the hot water could also help to dissolve any build up of mucous and relieve a sore throat, while easing the symptoms of a cough. Adding a slice of lemon into the water could also give you a boost of vitamin C.

2. Aid your digestion

While drinking cold water is good for your digestive system overall, it’s thought that by drinking hot water, you can actually help make the process even smoother. The theory is that hot water helps to break down and dissolve food more quickly than cold water, making digestion quicker and easier to handle – as well as easing constipation.

3. Improve your circulation

Drinking hot water could also help with maintaining healthy blood circulation too, which is important for muscles, joints, and tissue health, as well as maintaining your blood pressure, and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. It could even promote a healthy nervous system to help relieve stress.

4. Boost your detoxification

While cool or ambient water is great for giving your body a detox, drinking hot water can give your detox process a boost by raising your temperature slightly. By doing this, it makes your body sweat (not too much though!) which could increase the flush out and purge of toxins and help naturally cleanse your body.
