But we get it, everyone has such busy lives these days, that actually keeping track and reminding ourselves to drink enough water can be tough. Our bodies are super smart though and have all kinds of means of telling us we’re not getting enough water.
So here are our top 8 signs to look out for if you’re not drinking enough water:
You should never ignore that sticky, nasty feeling on the back of your tongue, as that is a sign that you are dehydrated and need to drink some water. Sugary soft drinks are only a temporary solution to this problem though, so instead reach for a glass of water and rehydrate yourself properly.
If your eyes feel heavy and dried out, that is another sign that you’re not drinking enough water. Without water in the body, your tear ducts can dry up over a period of time, which can cause damage to eyes.
This is one of the big signs that you are not getting enough water. Not drinking enough water means the body can’t sweat as well, causing excess dirt and oil to not be washed away effectively which over a period of time can cause us to have dry skin. As we know it is so important to look after our skin, always remember to drink enough water.
This might seem like an obvious one, but if the body is telling you to drink water, then listen to it, as your body will continue to send signals to your brain until your fluid levels are back to normal. So, make sure you continue to drink enough water throughout the day, so you don’t reach that stage where you get Thirsty.
If your pee is dark yellow in colour, then this is a big sign of dehydration. When your urine is more concentrated and dark, it means it contains more waster as there isn’t enough water flowing through the kidneys to flush out the toxins and eliminate any waste.
80% of our brains are made up from water, so when you’re dehydrated the brain tissue loses water causing brain shrinkage and dilated blood vessels, which is what causes the pain and inflation most commonly known as a headache.
There are other factors that can cause low energy levels, but one the major factors is a lack of water consumption. When you’re dehydrated, the body stores up energy by decreasing blood circulation, causing our muscles to receive a lower supply of oxygen, which is why we become lethargic and tired when we are dehydrated.
If you’ve eaten, but you still feel hungry, this could be a sign that you have not drunk enough water. When you’re dehydrated, the hypothalamus in the brain which controls the nervous and endocrine system can confuse thirst with hunger.
So, by looking out for some of these key signs, you may be able to detect when you are becoming dehydrated, and therefore can reach for a glass of water to help.
